A few days ago I showed you the jewelry drawer with the glass top that I built in my walk -in wardrobe. It is a fairly large drawer with interior dimensions of 41 5/8 “X 15”.
And it has a glass of worktop, so that everything shows when the drawer is closed.
I had viewed all possible options for jewelry drawer inserts, from Amazon options to custom options. I had really hoped that the drawer did something inherited, but I quickly realized that this would not be an option for me. I found a website on which you can design your own, but first your user -defined options were only up to 36 “wide. And if I want to spend money on some middle, it had to fit the entire drawer width.
But I started playing around with their online adjustment, just to get an idea of the price for something like that. Let’s just say I stopped designing (ie, I stopped the design to add subjects) when the price exceeded 500 US dollars. Under no circumstances can I justify over 500 US dollars for a tailor-made jewelry drawer insert if I only save inexpensive jewelry. If I were a collector of fine jewelry, I could probably spend so much to display it. But the only expensive piece of jewelry that I own is literally my wedding ring. Everything else is only inexpensive, funny jewelry that I buy in random places -printing transactions, hobby lobby, Amazon etc. -when I see something that I like.
Then I thought I could build my own compartments. In this way I was able to build it up so that the exact dimensions of the drawer correspond. So I picked up a few of these poplar boards from the home depot. These are 2.5 “x 48”.
And they are 1/4 “thick, which I made perfect for this project.
My idea was to tear them on 3/4 inch strips, cut them onto the required lengths and build a network in the drawer. Then I wanted to color the inside of the drawer and the network in a very light, warm brown stain color.
But it didn’t take long to realize that I would never bring these parts together in a way that I was satisfied with. I tried to put them together with hot glue, but I couldn’t use enough glue to hold them together. If I used too much glue, it would squeeze out the pages, and then these parts would not accept the stain. If I used too little, they would not stick together. I also tried to use wooden glue, but it dries so slowly that I would mess up the first section when I started to assemble the second section.
But that was not one of these projects. With all the major projects that still have to be carried out in the walk -in wardrobe (such as painting the cupboards and the construction of the central island), I wanted to spend my time to carry out this random time -consuming project with which I was about 95% sure that I would not even be satisfied when it was done.
I went back online. I have to admit that last night I returned to the idea of a custom hatchet for about an hour. I was actually very tempted when I found this company, the custom acrylic inserts for almost every purpose that you can imagine. There are times when it is worth paying for something for me. But because of the size of the drawer, I knew that I would look at a price of several hundred dollars. I just couldn’t get it.
Last night I searched for side dishes on Amazon, which I thought could work in my drawer. I couldn’t find the perfect size (not shocking), but finally I decided to go with this set of four in a light gray (affiliate link). Each set has four different network sizes.
I knew I wanted two of the same size because most of my earrings are quite small. And I was not sure what other size I wanted to use, so I ordered two sets. (I love Amazon overnight delivery !! Hurray for immediate satisfaction! I ordered before I went to bed and it was at my doorstep when I woke up. )
The color is a little darker than I was hoping, but they are very well done and robust.
I’m actually quite excited about what they look like! They are not a perfect fit, but it is certain that they have paid more than 500 US dollars for a custom setting.
Even when buying two sets, I still paid less than 100 US dollars for you.
Four of them fit into my drawer, and my plan is to color a pattern size of color to the gray so that I can paint the entire interior of the drawer in the same color.
There is a 1-inch gap on the front, but that doesn’t even show when the drawer is closed. So that doesn’t bother me at all.
And since I have four trays left, I think about reducing one of the additional trays (the grids removable) to fill the additional 3.5-inch room in the middle to get a fully adapted size and to have filled the entire drawer from left to right. I have no idea if I can, but you can be sure that I will try it!
Anyway, I am very satisfied with how it turns out. I think as soon as I have painted the inside of the drawer to match the trays, it will look fantastic! And of course I still plan to add adhesive light to the drawer and in the necklace compartment.
I also still try to find out the details about how I want to complete the necklace extract deposit. They had some great ideas about it, so I still weigh the options.
Update: I did it! I used one of the additional tablets, cut it off and put it together to fill the additional space. And now I have a fully custom jewelry drawer with inserts that fit perfectly into the 41 4/8 width of my drawer. While a user -defined supplement for this drawer would have cost me well over 500 US dollars, this option with these Amazon tablets (affiliate link) and cutting one of the tablets that promote me for two sets of $ 65.88 cost about an hour to redesign one of the tablets for a perfect fit.
It was really easy to do. These trays consist of a combination of thin cardboard and heavy cardboard, so that all of this can be done with scissors and a razor blade. I first removed this strip made of velvety -covered box from the inside to reuse it.
I removed it very gently so that none of the velvet had expired and that the box was not bent when I removed it.
And then I could easily separate the sides from the bottom of the tablet. I used a razor blade to cut the floor to the 3.5-inch width that I needed to fill the room.
And then I put the lower piece in place and then put the two long side pieces in place.
Then I used my razor blade to fell the upper and lower side pieces. This was the most difficult part of the entire process because they somehow had to be mitigated. It is not the easiest to make a guest time with a razor blade with a razor blade, but I only patiently worked with it until I fit it. It wasn’t perfect, but it was good enough. As soon as the cardboard is too large, I carefully cut it with scissors to give it clean edges on the corners. And then I used hot glue to glue these end pieces into the side pieces.
And finally I cut these inner strips to fit them and glued back to see them finished. It was a pretty simple process. And see how good it looks now! I have a completely tailor -made fit and saved at least 430 US dollars about what a custom use for this drawer would have cost!
I still have to paint the inside of the drawer to meet the inserts, and I think it will look so good as soon as everything is finished.
I know it’s probably silly, but this is one of these little details that I am so happy about. I want things to look individual, but I don’t always like to pay the price for tailor -made items. That’s why I’m so DIY. But under no circumstances did I want to make the entire velvet -covered use from scratch. This was a good compromise bought in the shop and bought between in the shop. And you can’t surpass this price!
This is how it looked beforehand:
And here is the tailor -made look …
It’s a little detail, but it’s so much better!
